Bali Blue Caramel Swirl gives the butterfly shape a broad front with upswept corners. Angular at the top and softer at the base, the silhouette draws on 1970s lines. The brown and caramel tortoiseshell pattern brings warmth to the design. On oval and square faces, the raised corners draw the eye towards the top of the frame.

Designed by us, made from Italian Mazzucchelli acetate and assembled in Bali.

Clear blue-light filtering lenses are included, or choose polarised UV400 sun lenses at no extra cost. Polarised lenses soften reflections from water or the road. Special HOYA tints are offered separately. For prescription lenses, our opticians can advise you in store.

Our eyewear expertise

01

Signature collection

This collection is conceived and produced by our team. The idea is to offer contemporary glasses that are easy to wear. These butterfly frames are designed to remain timeless and well balanced on the face. We produce all frames in small quantities to keep a limited selection that is regularly refreshed in our boutiques. Each model is designed for everyday comfort and to work easily with different styles.

How We Make Our Glasses
02

Materials and case

Our Signature acetate butterfly models use Italian Mazzucchelli acetate, chosen for its layered colours and the way it can be shaped and polished. The hinges are designed for daily use. Each pair comes with a Maison Mata case and a microfibre cloth. We work with small workshops in Bali and elsewhere in Indonesia for cases and packaging. Our sunglasses offer UV400 protection.

Advice and care

Our opticians can advise you on prescription lenses in store. These include UV protection, anti-reflective treatment and a hard coating to help resist small scratches.

Lifetime care for your Maison Mata butterfly glasses is free in store: replacement screws and nose pads, acetate polishing and frame adjustments.

Rinse off dust or sand with clean, lukewarm water, then dry gently with a clean microfibre cloth. Keep your glasses in their case when you are not wearing them.

Prescription lens options

Maison Mata frames are designed to take prescription or sun lenses. These butterfly frames can be fitted with different lens types according to your prescription and needs: single-vision, progressive, polarised, photochromic or blue-light filtering lenses. Our opticians can guide you towards lenses suited to your vision and everyday use. You can also have a free eye exam with our optometrists in Canggu, Ubud or Sanur. This eye exam allows us to establish your prescription before making your lenses.

03Questions

Lenses, care and personalisation

  1. 01Which face shapes suit butterfly glasses?

Butterfly sunglasses widen towards the outer corners, with curves that give the upper frame an open, wing-like outline. Our women’s selection explores this shape through softer lines and more pronounced acetate rims. On square, oval or heart-shaped faces, the curved outline offers a way to contrast with angles or echo softer contours. Our sunglasses provide UV400 protection. Our opticians can explain the prescription lens options available for each model.

  2. 02Will butterfly glasses make my face look too large or too small?

The same shape can look different depending on its width, lens height and rim thickness. A larger frame creates more presence; a fine rim or translucent acetate gives a lighter outline. Use the product-page dimensions to compare proportions. Our opticians can help with sizing and adjustment.

  3. 03How does Handmade differ from Signature?

We design our Signature frames, which are assembled in Bali. The acetate models use Italian Mazzucchelli acetate. Handmade is a separate collection with a different production process.

Our Handmade frames are made from start to finish in our Canggu workshop. Our artisans shape, assemble and polish each frame by hand; a CNC machine makes the precise initial cut. Around 15 days of production allow time to refine the contours, balance and finish before the pair is ready.

The same model can have small differences in acetate patterns and hand finishing. This is part of the character of a Handmade pair.

  4. 04What are polarised lenses, and when are they most useful?

Polarised lenses reduce glare from light reflected by surfaces such as water or roads.
They can make bright conditions more comfortable, particularly for daytime driving.
Our polarised sun lenses offer UV400 protection. Non-prescription versions have no anti-reflective treatment; prescription versions include it, as do our other prescription lenses. Polarisation reduces glare: it is not required for UV protection.

  5. 05What should I avoid so my frames don’t warp (heat, sunlight, salt water)?

Keep your glasses in their case when not wearing them, away from direct heat such as a car dashboard.
Rinse off sand or salt before using a clean microfibre cloth. Avoid solvents and household cleaners. Bring the frame to us if it needs adjustment rather than bending it yourself.

  6. 06Can I book an eye exam and get lenses fitted the same day?

Single-vision lenses usually take 30 minutes to 3 days; progressive and office lenses usually take 7 to 10 days. Timing depends on your prescription, lens availability and the laboratory, and we confirm the estimate before you order.

Free eye exams are available in Canggu, Ubud and Sanur. Lens edging and fitting into the frame are carried out at our Canggu workshop.
