Your Maison Mata eye exam is carried out by our qualified optometrists. They use an autorefractor to obtain an initial estimate of your prescription.

Next comes manual refraction. Looking at a digital eye chart, you compare different lenses as we refine your prescription with you. We check your near and distance vision, first with each eye separately, then with both eyes together. This helps us assess short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and age-related changes in near vision.

The aim is to obtain an accurate measurement suited to your everyday needs. You try the prescription in a trial frame while reading, walking and looking into the distance. This lets us discuss comfort as well as clarity.

Allow around 20 to 30 minutes. Eye exams are free in Canggu, Ubud and Sanur, with no obligation to buy glasses. You can also return for a check to monitor changes in your vision over time.

After your eye exam, our opticians help you choose prescription lenses suited to your prescription and daily life. Single-vision lenses provide the same correction across their surface to correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism. We choose them around the activities that matter to you: reading, working at a screen or driving.

For presbyopia, when focusing up close becomes harder with age, progressive lenses bring together distance, intermediate and reading zones in one pair. The correction changes gradually between these zones. Our opticians explain how to use them and help you as you get used to them.

We work with ZEISS, HOYA, Essilor, Rodenstock and other established lens laboratories. We explain how a thinner lens can suit your prescription and frame, and what coatings offer in terms of reducing reflections, UV protection and everyday care, particularly in Bali’s bright, changing light.

Our prescription lenses include UV protection, an anti-reflective coating and a coating that helps resist fine scratches. These are plastic lenses, not mineral glass: they can still scratch and need careful cleaning.

Glasses with single-vision lenses usually take 30 minutes to 3 days to prepare, while progressive or office lenses take 7 to 10 days. The time depends on your prescription and the laboratory. We confirm it with you before you order.

At Maison Mata, part of our eyewear is made right here, in our in-store workshop. It all begins with a sheet of acetate, an idea, a sketch. The drawing becomes a shape, the shape becomes a frame. The edges are cut, the bevel is polished and the surfaces are worked by hand until they feel smooth and develop a deep, natural shine. Nothing is standardised: each piece takes shape through the material, the maker’s touch and their eye for detail.

A handmade frame takes an average of 15 days to make, moving through several stages: cutting, shaping, calibration, adjustment, drilling, assembly and final polishing. We refine the thickness, balance, curve of the arms and fit on the nose so that the frame feels comfortable from the first few minutes of wear. Every stage can be observed directly in the boutique. Customers see the finished product, as well as the time, work, precision and hands that created it.

Each acetate colour has its own depth and patterns. The part of the sheet we cut from, and the way we sand and polish it, give the frame its own details. The material and hand finishing give each pair its character.

We make these frames to stay with you over time. Their fit can be refined, the acetate repolished and repair possibilities assessed in our workshop. This ongoing care is part of the life of the pair.

A loose arm or a frame sitting crooked? Bring us your glasses. We check their alignment and adjust how they rest on your nose and ears to keep them comfortable over time. Making frames in our own workshop gives our team practical knowledge of their construction, materials and fit.

Care for your Maison Mata glasses is free for life in our boutiques: replacing screws and nose pads, polishing the acetate and adjusting the frame. We also examine glasses bought elsewhere and repair what is technically possible. For other repairs and parts, we explain any costs before we start.
