Moonbeam’s Elixir sunglasses combine a rectangular front with tapered outer corners and a subtle butterfly lift. The design draws on the layered acetate frames of 1970s Italian eyewear. Shown here in Transparent Green. Designed for women and men. On long, oval and square faces, the lifted corners draw attention to the upper face.

We make this Handmade frame in our Canggu workshop in Bali from Italian Mazzucchelli acetate. This model is often made from layered acetate sheets to create depth and contrast. We shape and polish the contours by hand to reveal the depth of colour and create a smooth surface. Allow around 15 days for production, excluding shipping. Frame size, acetate colour and engraving can be personalised at no extra cost. Each pair is adjusted by hand in our Canggu boutique.

You can also personalise it in our Virtual Atelier: try it on, adjust the size, change the acetate and send us your design.

Your choice of included lenses: polarised sun lenses, clear blue-light filtering lenses or special HOYA tints. The sun lenses offer UV400 protection. Photochromic lenses are available as an option; for prescription lenses, our opticians can advise you in store.

Making and personalisation

In our Canggu workshop, each frame begins with a sheet of Italian Mazzucchelli acetate. We refine the shape of these rectangular glasses, work the contours of the frame by hand and polish it to a smooth finish.

Made-to-order production takes around 15 days, plus shipping. Choose the frame size, acetate colour and engraving at no extra cost; lens options are selected separately.

How We Make Our Glasses

Materials and case

For these rectangular frames, we choose Italian Mazzucchelli acetate for its depth of colour and the way it can be shaped and polished. A thin steel core reinforces the temples.

Our polarised sun lenses are made from CR-39: they offer UV400 protection and reduce glare from reflections.

Your frame comes with a case and a microfibre cloth, even if you choose it without lenses.

Lifetime care

Lifetime care for your Maison Mata rectangular glasses is free in store: replacement screws and nose pads, acetate polishing and frame adjustments.

Rinse off dust and sand with clean, lukewarm water, then dry gently with a clean microfibre cloth. Avoid solvents and household cleaning products. For adjustments, bring your frame to us rather than bending it yourself.

Between uses, keep your glasses in their case, away from strong heat.

Our Handmade rectangular glasses can take prescription or sun lenses. Depending on your prescription and the frame you choose, options include single-vision, progressive, polarised, photochromic or blue-light filtering lenses.

Our opticians help you choose lenses suited to your vision and everyday life. In Canggu, Ubud and Sanur, you can have a free eye exam with our optometrists. This eye exam allows us to establish your prescription before making your lenses.

01Which face shapes suit rectangular glasses?

Rectangular sunglasses draw a horizontal line across the face. Their straight edges add definition to round and oval contours. On square or angular faces, rounded corners or finer rims give a softer version of the same shape. Explore designs for women and men, from discreet outlines to more pronounced acetate frames.
02Will rectangular glasses make my face look too large or too small?

The same shape can look different depending on its width, lens height and rim thickness. A larger frame creates more presence; a fine rim or translucent acetate gives a lighter outline. Use the product-page dimensions to compare proportions. Our opticians can help with sizing and adjustment.
03Do you offer tailor-made or bespoke frames, and how does the custom process work?

Yes. Our Tailor-Made service begins with your ideas, a mood board and your measurements.
We develop drawings and prototypes with you, then refine the model before production.
Allow 30 days for design and production in Canggu. The frame is shaped and polished by hand after an initial CNC cut.
04What is the difference between polarised and photochromic lenses?

Polarised lenses reduce glare reflected from surfaces such as water and roads.
Photochromic lenses change tint with the light, becoming darker outdoors and clearer indoors. These are different functions; a photochromic lens is not automatically polarised. Our opticians help you choose according to your daily use.
05Do you offer in-store eye exams and lens fitting with an optometrist?

Qualified optometrists provide free eye exams at Maison Mata Canggu, Ubud and Sanur. Our team advises on prescription lenses, which are edged at our Canggu workshop. Eye exams are not available at Seminyak.
06What materials do you use for your frames, and why?

The acetate models in our Signature and Handmade collections use Italian Mazzucchelli acetate.
We choose it for its depth of colour and the way it can be shaped and polished.
The material brings its patterns and finish to each design, from translucent shades to layered tortoiseshell.
