Java Joy Velvet Noir sunglasses bring a squared outline to the aviator shape, with a distinct double bridge. The design draws on vintage pilot eyewear. The black finish emphasises the frame’s clean outline. Designed for women and men. On oval and square faces, the frame’s defined lines add structure.

Designed by us, made from Italian Mazzucchelli acetate and assembled in Bali.

Clear blue-light filtering lenses are included, or choose polarised UV400 sun lenses at no extra cost. Polarised lenses soften glare. Photochromic lenses that change tint with the light and special HOYA tints are available separately. For prescription lenses, our opticians can advise you in store. Our sun lenses offer UV400 protection.

How We Make Our Glasses

Signature collection

This collection is conceived and produced by our team. The idea is to offer contemporary glasses that are easy to wear. These aviator frames are designed to remain timeless and well balanced on the face. We produce all frames in small quantities to keep a limited selection that is regularly refreshed in our boutiques. Each model is designed for everyday comfort and to work easily with different styles.

Materials and case

Our Signature acetate aviator models use Italian Mazzucchelli acetate, chosen for its layered colours and the way it can be shaped and polished. The hinges are designed for daily use. Each pair comes with a Maison Mata case and a microfibre cloth. We work with small workshops in Bali and elsewhere in Indonesia for cases and packaging. Our sunglasses offer UV400 protection.

Advice and care

Our opticians can advise you on prescription lenses in store. These include UV protection, anti-reflective treatment and a hard coating to help resist small scratches.

Lifetime care for your Maison Mata aviator glasses is free in store: replacement screws and nose pads, acetate polishing and frame adjustments.

Rinse off dust or sand with clean, lukewarm water, then dry gently with a clean microfibre cloth. Keep your glasses in their case when you are not wearing them.

Maison Mata frames are designed to take prescription or sun lenses. These aviator frames can be fitted with different lens types according to your prescription and needs: single-vision, progressive, polarised, photochromic or blue-light filtering lenses. Our opticians can guide you towards lenses suited to your vision and everyday use. You can also have a free eye exam with our optometrists in Canggu, Ubud or Sanur. This eye exam allows us to establish your prescription before making your lenses.

Lenses, care and personalisation

01Which face shapes suit aviator glasses?

Aviator sunglasses combine a broad upper line with lenses that curve downwards. Our selection for women and men explores this silhouette through different proportions and frame thicknesses. Those curved lower edges can contrast with a square jaw or follow the softer lines of oval and heart-shaped faces. Our sunglasses provide UV400 protection. Ask our opticians about the prescription lens options available for your chosen model.
02Will aviator glasses make my face look too large or too small?

The same shape can look different depending on its width, lens height and rim thickness. A larger frame creates more presence; a fine rim or translucent acetate gives a lighter outline. Use the product-page dimensions to compare proportions. Our opticians can help with sizing and adjustment.
03What is the difference between Handmade, Tailor-Made and frame personalisation?

Signature frames come in the sizes and colours shown on their product pages. For a personalised frame, choose our Handmade collection or Tailor-Made service.
Handmade frames are shaped, assembled and polished by hand in our Canggu workshop, after an initial CNC cut. You can personalise an existing model in size, acetate colour and engraving at no extra cost. Production takes around 15 days.
Our Tailor-Made service begins with a new design, created from your ideas and measurements. Allow 30 days for design and production. Both timings exclude shipping; lens options are selected separately.
04Are polarised sunglasses useful for driving or outdoor activities in Bali?

Polarised lenses reduce glare from light reflected by surfaces such as water or roads.
They can make bright conditions more comfortable, particularly for daytime driving.
Our polarised sun lenses offer UV400 protection. Non-prescription versions have no anti-reflective treatment; prescription versions include it, as do our other prescription lenses. Polarisation reduces glare: it is not required for UV protection.
05What should I do if my glasses get damaged or scratched?

Bring your glasses to a Maison Mata boutique so we can examine the damage.
An acetate frame can be polished to soften light surface marks; repairs and replacement parts depend on its condition. When we replace a part, we aim to match the original colour and finish.
We do not polish scratched lenses.
Our opticians explain the replacement options and any charges before carrying out the work.

06Where are Maison Mata frames made, and can I see the crafting process in Bali?

Our Signature frames are our own designs, produced in our manufacturing facility and then assembled in Bali.
We make our Handmade frames in our Canggu workshop in Bali. You can watch our artisans through the workshop’s glass walls as they shape, assemble and polish frames by hand, after an initial CNC cut. You see the work that turns a sheet of acetate into a frame.
