Moon River pairs an elongated oval with a curved opening above each lens. We took inspiration from waves and Balinese design for these flowing lines. Shown here in Marble, it is worn by women and men: its curves follow round and oval features and contrast with square faces.

We make this Handmade frame in our Canggu workshop in Bali from Italian Mazzucchelli acetate. We shape and polish the contours by hand to reveal the depth of colour and create a smooth surface. Allow around 15 days for production, excluding shipping. Frame size, acetate colour and engraving can be personalised at no extra cost. Each pair is adjusted by hand in our Canggu boutique.

You can also personalise it in our Virtual Atelier: try it on, adjust the size, change the acetate and send us your design.

Your choice of included lenses: polarised sun lenses, clear blue-light filtering lenses or special HOYA tints. The sun lenses offer UV400 protection. Photochromic lenses are available as an option; for prescription lenses, our opticians can advise you in store.

Making and personalisation

In our Canggu workshop, each frame begins with a sheet of Italian Mazzucchelli acetate. We refine the gentle curves of these oval glasses, work the contours of the frame by hand and polish it to a smooth finish.

Made-to-order production takes around 15 days, plus shipping. Choose the frame size, acetate colour and engraving at no extra cost; lens options are selected separately.

How We Make Our Glasses

Materials and case

For these oval frames, we choose Italian Mazzucchelli acetate for its depth of colour and the way it can be shaped and polished. A thin stainless steel core reinforces the temples.

Our polarised sun lenses are made from CR-39: they offer UV400 protection and reduce glare from reflections.

Your frame comes with a case and a microfibre cloth, even if you choose it without lenses.

Lifetime care

Lifetime care for your Maison Mata oval glasses is free in store: replacement screws and nose pads, acetate polishing and frame adjustments.

Rinse off dust and sand with clean, lukewarm water, then dry gently with a clean microfibre cloth. Avoid solvents and household cleaning products. For adjustments, bring your frame to us rather than bending it yourself.

Between uses, keep your glasses in their case, away from strong heat.

Our Handmade oval glasses can take prescription or sun lenses. Depending on your prescription and the frame you choose, options include single-vision, progressive, polarised, photochromic or blue-light filtering lenses.

Our opticians help you choose lenses suited to your vision and everyday life. In Canggu, Ubud and Sanur, you can have a free eye exam with our optometrists. This eye exam allows us to establish your prescription before making your lenses.

Lenses, care and personalisation

01Is the oval shape suitable for my face?

Oval sunglasses stretch a rounded shape horizontally. Their curves contrast with square, rectangular or angular features, while a narrow profile gives the frame a more discreet line. Thicker rims change the mood without changing the shape. Explore oval designs for women and men.
02Will oval glasses make my face look too large or too small?

The same shape can look different depending on its width, lens height and rim thickness. A larger frame creates more presence; a fine rim or translucent acetate gives a lighter outline. Use the product-page dimensions to compare proportions. Our opticians can help with sizing and adjustment.
03How long does it take to make a Handmade frame from start to finish?

A Handmade frame takes around 15 days to make in our Canggu workshop, excluding shipping.
We shape, assemble and polish the frame by hand, after an initial CNC cut.
04Do blue-light filter lenses really help with screens and eye strain?

Blue-light filters reduce part of the blue light reaching your eyes. They have not been shown to reliably relieve screen-related eye strain or headaches.

05How should I clean my lenses without scratching them?

Use the microfibre cloth supplied with your Maison Mata glasses and our lens cleaning solution.
Rinse off sand or salt with clean water before wiping. Avoid paper tissues and clothing, which can scratch the lenses.
06What role does sustainability play in Maison Mata’s materials and packaging?

We use Italian Mazzucchelli acetate, made from modified plant cellulose and plasticisers. It can be shaped, adjusted and polished, which helps us maintain the frame over time.
We make Handmade frames in Canggu and work with workshops in Bali and Java for accessories and packaging. Our leather cases are made in Kerobokan, pandan cases in Yogyakarta and fabric pouches in Bali. Each frame includes a case and microfibre cloth.
