Office lenses: the overlooked answer to screen fatigue

Plenty of people work eight hours a day at a distance none of their lenses was designed for. The office lens exists precisely for that zone.
A reading lens is calculated for around 40 centimetres, the distance of a book. A distance lens is calculated for infinity. A computer screen sits between the two, around 60 to 70 centimetres, and a second monitor or a colleague across the desk sits further still. That intermediate zone is poorly covered, and it is where most office eye strain begins.
The problem nobody names
From around forty, the lens of the eye gradually loses its flexibility. This is presbyopia, a normal phenomenon, not an illness. It shows up first up close, you hold the restaurant menu further away, then it spreads to intermediate distances.
People then adopt unconscious strategies. They lift their chin to look at the screen through the bottom of their progressives. They push their chair back. They increase the font size. They take their glasses off and lean forward. Each of those strategies has a cost: tension in the neck and shoulders, a hunched back, eyes that pull by late afternoon.
What an office lens is
An office lens is a progressive lens, but with its range of powers narrowed onto a different portion. Where a classic progressive has to cover from infinity down to 40 centimetres, the office lens covers, for example, from 4 metres down to 40 centimetres.
Reducing the range to be covered frees up space on the lens. The result is concrete: the sharp zone for the screen becomes much wider, distortion at the edges drops sharply, and your head no longer has to hunt for the right position. You can scan a wide monitor with a simple movement of the eyes.
Depending on the manufacturer they are also called degressive lenses, near-vision lenses or intermediate lenses. The principle is the same, only the depth of field changes: some are set for 1.5 metres, others out to 4 metres. That choice is made from your actual workstation, not from a catalogue.

Who they help, and who they do not
They help people with presbyopia who spend more than three hours a day in front of a screen, those who find their progressives tiring at work, and those who switch between screen, paper and the person opposite them.
They do not help younger people without presbyopia whose screen fatigue comes from something else: dry eyes, a correction they are not wearing, uncorrected astigmatism, badly placed lighting, or simply no breaks. Prescribing an office lens in that case solves nothing.
They do not replace a distance pair. In office lenses, a face ten metres away is blurred and driving is out of the question. It is a second pair, not your only pair. That is the main barrier to adopting them, and also why they are rarely talked about: you have to accept changing glasses when you get to your desk.
The workstation matters as much as the lens
A good office lens will not compensate for a badly set up desk. Three simple markers.
The top of the screen should sit at eye level or slightly below. A screen that is too high forces you to lift your chin, which is exactly what the office lens is meant to prevent.
The eye to screen distance should be about an arm's length. Note it down, in centimetres, before your appointment: it feeds into the lens calculation.
The screen should not face a window, nor have a window behind it. Reflections force the eye to work against stray light, and an anti-reflective coating will not fix bad placement.
What about blue light
The question comes up every time. Blue light filters can improve perceived comfort for some people, but the evidence for a measurable effect on eye strain remains limited. Screen comfort rests first on three things: an accurate correction at the right distance, a well set up workstation, and regular breaks. A filter stays a comfort option, not a solution.

How to know if it is for you
A simple test, over an ordinary working day: note every time you lift your chin, push your chair back or take your glasses off. If it happens several times an hour, your intermediate distance is poorly corrected, and an office lens is worth assessing.
