Driving in Bali Without the Glare: The Lenses That Change Everything

Between oncoming LED headlights on the Sunset Road, the five o'clock downpour and the low evening sun, driving in Bali tests your eyes more than most places. The good news: almost everything comes down to the treatment on your lenses, not to a miracle accessory.

People often ask us for night driving glasses. Nearly always after a bad moment: a scooter met at full beam on an unlit road, a second of blindness, a shiver. The request is legitimate. The common answer, a yellow tinted lens bought online, is not. Here is what works, and why.

The real problem is not darkness, it is contrast

At night your pupil dilates to capture as much light as possible. A wide pupil uses the whole surface of the lens of the eye, including its periphery, where the eye's natural optical flaws are most pronounced. The result: points of light turn into halos and starbursts.

Then along comes an LED headlight, whose peak intensity is far harsher than the old halogen bulbs. Your pupil contracts in a fraction of a second, then takes several seconds to reopen once the vehicle has passed. During that window, you are driving with sharply reduced vision. It is that brutal swing, not the darkness itself, that makes night driving so demanding.

Anti-reflective, the only coating that really counts

An untreated lens reflects around 8 per cent of the light that hits it, roughly 4 per cent per face. By day this goes unnoticed. At night, that reflected light turns into rings, ghost images of headlights and reflections of your own eyes inside the lens.

A multi-layer anti-reflective coating brings that loss below 1 per cent. Two benefits stack up: more useful light reaches your retina, and far less stray light bounces around inside the lens. It is the only device whose night-time benefit is agreed on across the profession.

One detail matters as much as the coating itself: how clean it is. A greasy lens scatters light almost as much as an untreated one. In the tropics, between sunscreen, perspiration and road dust, a daily clean changes more than a premium lens left dirty.

Yellow night driving lenses, what to make of them

The promise is appealing: filter blue to boost contrast. The sensation is real, edges do look crisper. The problem lies elsewhere.

Any tint, yellow included, reduces the amount of light transmitted to the eye. At night, that is precisely what you are short of. Studies on the subject have not shown improved detection of pedestrians, nor faster recovery after glare. In Europe, a tint above category 0 is in fact advised against for night driving.

Our position as opticians is simple: to drive at night, a clear lens made to your prescription, with an excellent anti-reflective coating, kept clean. Nothing else.

By day, polarised lenses and their caveat

After the rain, tarmac throws back a sheet of horizontal light that erases road markings and hides potholes. Same story along flooded rice fields and on coastal roads. A polarised lens cuts exactly that horizontal component and restores the relief of the road surface. For anyone driving in Bali by day, it is the most immediately noticeable improvement there is.

The caveat: polarisation can darken some liquid crystal displays depending on the angle, a digital dashboard or a phone clipped in portrait mode for GPS. Rotating the mount a few degrees usually solves it. On two wheels, where you look at the road far more than at a screen, the question barely arises.

The most demanding window: half past five to seven

Near the equator, dusk is short. Barely twenty minutes separate the low western sun, which blinds you on every east to west road, from full darkness under patchy street lighting. Your eye does not get the gradual adaptation it would have in Europe.

This is the one situation where we firmly recommend two pairs rather than one: prescription sunglasses for late afternoon, and a well-treated clear pair for what follows. A single photochromic lens stays slightly tinted for a few minutes after sunset, at exactly the moment you need it least.

On a scooter, the part nobody mentions

Wind dries the surface of the eye and disturbs the tear film, blurring vision well before you notice. Add dust, insects and a frame that shifts under the helmet strap, and visual comfort collapses.

Three adjustments make the difference: slim temples that pass without pressure under the helmet padding, a snug fit so the frame does not drop at every speed bump, and a serious scratch-resistant coating, because a lens exposed to road dust scratches fast. What we recommend, depending on your journey

Mostly daytime riding: prescription sunglasses, category 3, polarised. Often out after dark: a clear lens to your prescription, premium anti-reflective, no tint at all. Both in the same day: two pairs, and switch at the right moment rather than compromising on both.

At night you are not trying to filter light. You are trying to let in as much as possible, and waste as little as possible.
