Eyewear hinges: screw, spring, screwless, how to choose

It is the smallest part of a pair of glasses, the one nobody ever looks at, and it is almost always where the failure starts.
A frame opens and closes roughly twice a day. Over five years that adds up to more than three thousand cycles, without counting the times you take your glasses off with one hand, which twists the hinge instead of pivoting it. No other part of the frame takes that kind of treatment. Understanding the three main hinge families tells you what to expect, and above all how to avoid wearing them out early.
The screw hinge, the benchmark
This is the historic construction: two metal parts nested into each other and held by a screw. On an acetate frame, those parts are heat-sunk into the material, which is called implantation. Good implantation is deep and wide, spreading the load instead of concentrating it on one point.
Its strengths: it comes apart, it can be replaced, it can be repaired. A lost screw costs a few cents and takes two minutes to change at any optician. Its weakness: the screw works loose with vibration, especially on a scooter or in a bag.
The useful habit is to check your screws two or three times a year. A hinge that clicks slightly as you open the temple already has play. Tightened in time, it will run for years. Left as it is, the play widens the housing in the metal, and at that stage only a hinge replacement solves the problem.
The flex hinge, widely misunderstood
The flex hinge, or spring hinge, adds a small mechanism inside the temple that lets it open beyond its normal position, then spring back. It is often sold as proof of strength. That is not quite accurate.
What it actually does: it absorbs excess movement. When you pull your glasses on over your head, or take them off one-handed, the temple swings outward. Without a flex hinge, that force travels back to the front and gradually loosens the implantation. With a flex hinge, the spring takes the load and the front stays put.
Its limit: the mechanism itself contains tiny moving parts. By the sea, salt eventually seizes up cheaper flex hinges. And once the spring is dead, the temple flops. A good flex hinge, in stainless steel and properly sealed, holds up very well in the tropics. A cheap one is a weak point, not a strong one.
Another misread effect: a flex hinge makes a frame feel like it "holds well" when it is in fact too narrow. The spring compensates by gripping the temples. Over time that creates painful pressure points. A frame has to be the right width first, and a flex hinge is not there to fix a sizing mistake.

The screwless hinge
Several systems exist: elastic clip, moulded pivot, articulation through the material itself flexing. The sales argument is obvious, no screws means no screws to lose.
In practice, these hinges wear out without warning and repair badly. When the clip tires, there is nothing to tighten. On very fine, minimalist frames where the hinge is part of the design, it is a trade-off you accept. On an everyday frame, a well implanted screw hinge lasts longer, precisely because it can be taken apart.
The three habits that wear a hinge out
Taking your glasses off with one hand. The movement twists the same temple every time. With both hands the load is symmetrical, and effectively nil.
Putting your glasses down with the temples open and the lenses facing down. The weight presses on the hinges and scratches the lenses in the process.
Leaving them loose in a bag with no hard case. Vibration loosens screws, and sand works its way into flex mechanisms.
When to see an optician
A temple that drops on its own when you hold the frame by the front, a temple that no longer folds flat against the front, a slight cracking sound on opening: all of these are fixed in the workshop in a few minutes, as long as the implantation is intact. Waiting, on the other hand, turns a free tightening into a hinge replacement.
